Got Advice For MTA? Yonkers' Mayer Wants To Hear

YONKERS, N.Y. – A Yonkers politician wants to hear your beefs with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

Assembly member Shelley Mayer (D-Yonkers) said Monday that she is organizing a Yonkers Commuter Advisory Committee for Yonkers train and bus riders to sound off on ways service could be improved.

“The MTA and Bee-Line Bus provide important services to Yonkers residents, and it is important to have their needs and ideas represented,” Mayer said in a news release.

Fortunately for Mayer, Yonkers residents aren’t short on ideas. From lower ticket prices to cleaner restrooms, many riders say they know a few ways service could be improved.

After missing his Monday afternoon train to Manhattan because of problems with the automated ticket machine, Konstantine Kostov said he would like to see an MTA employee inside the Yonkers train station, helping travelers who may not be familiar with the system.

“I realize they are trying to cut costs, but an MTA representative in the station would be nice,” he said. “A computer doesn’t help as much as an actual person would.”

Kostov added that he would like the option to purchase something other than soda or snacks offered by dispensers in the station.

“You can’t buy a newspaper or coffee or anything,” he said.

Yonkers student Nadia Carmon said she would like to see better upkeep of the train’s restrooms.

“The bathrooms could be a little cleaner,” she said. “I don’t like to use them because they can be unkempt at times.”

Carmon had a few suggestions for the bus line too. A former student at Westchester Community College, Carmon said she often rode the Bee-Line to class and found the routes could be confusing.

More than once she accidentally boarded the wrong bus and wound up at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, a 15-minute walk to the school, she said.

“I think it might be more convenient if they all stopped at one place,” Carmon said. “In the morning especially, it can be a little confusing.”

Mayer asks that travelers interested in serving on the committee or sharing their ideas for better service call her office 914-779-8805.
