Five community-service minded residents were honored Tuesday at City Hall as part of the first-ever national Mayor’s Day of Recognition.

Yonkers inaugural class of honored volunteers, chosen by Mayor Mike Spano, was made up of Dora Mejicovsky, Gloria Jordan, Maria Ganzi, Eva Jozsef and Wilma Allen.

“Today we honor those unsung heroes of Yonkers – the volunteers who give of themselves to their communities each and every day to our children, seniors, neighborhoods and civic issues,” Spano said in a statement.

Yonkers’ mayor joined more than 600 mayors across the country Tuesday, spotlighting the impact of national service and thanking those who serve in their communities.

All of Yonkers’ honorees contribute to the city’s non-profit organizations, Spano said, assisting those in the community.

For example, Jordan volunteers at a fitness program for second grade students at Thomas Cornell Academy while Wilma Allen has served as a longtime volunteer for the Foster Grandparent Program.

Mejicovsky also has had an impact on Yonkers students, mentoring more than 40 children and volunteering for several literacy programs.

Meanwhile, Ganzi, 85, has been a volunteer of St. Joseph’s Medical Center for more than 43 years and continues to volunteer as much as 40 hours per week.   And Jozsef has volunteered for the Docent Council of the Hudson River Museum in Yonkers, now acting as its president.

“It is apparent these volunteers selfishly donate their time and demonstrate excellence, leadership and integrity within their community, serving as role models for other residents,” Spano said.
