"I would like to first thank Mr. (Bill) McGrath for awarding me this opportunity and supporting me as I come closer to fulfilling my dream of becoming a registered nurse," said Muccio.
"I would also like to thank the many generous donors in the room for investing in students like me. There are so many of us who would not be here if it wasn’t for your generosity. As we travel our journeys, we are reminded of your support."
For her speech, Muccio shared a special reason about why she chose to study nursing.
"I like to say I bring a special approach to my nursing care," said Muccio. "I come from a family of four. We are close-knit, and I share a special bond with my twin brother, Anthony. Seven years ago my family was given devastating news. My amazing mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. The initial news was shocking, but as a strong family we decided that nothing can break our bond. My family made it our priority to support my mother 100 percent."
Muccio explained the strength of her family and her mother throughout her mother's fight with cancer. In August 2013, she lost her mother, but she made a promise to always fulfill her dreams as a nurse.
"Nicole, promise me you will continue school, and become the nurse I imagine you to be," said Muccio's mother. "Don't be afraid to go out of your comfort zone and challenge yourself."
Muccio felt especially thankful for receiving the Nora J. McGrath scholarship because the award was established in honor of Bill McGrath's mother.
