YONKERS, N.Y. -- More than 700 people will be coming together in Yonkers to play softball and remember Mike Nolan.

Nolan's family is hosting a softball tournament on Saturday, July 22 at Cook Field in Yonkers to raise money for the Michael Nolan Scholarship Fund from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Twenty teams will be playing, including the Yonkers Police Department, Yonkers Fire Department, and Westchester County Police.

Nolan, a baseball player drafted by the Oakland Athletics, was killed in a shooting in 2015. He was 23 years old. The scholarship fund selects eight students, one from each Yonkers High School, and is given to students who excel both on and off the field.

"We want to have fun and remember Mike," James Nolan, president of the scholarship fund and Mike's brother, said.

James said last year's tournament was amazing and it shows how many lives his brother impacted. He said Mike would've loved to have gotten to know the scholarship recipients.

"They are remarkable kids and great athletes," James said. "I love hearing how hard they have worked and what this means to their families. The kids have told me what an honor it is to represent my brother."

James said Mike was an "amazing person," who loved to have fun.

"He loved to go out and socialize," James said. "He was hard working, smart and determined. There's a gaping hole with him not being here."

A day to play softball and hang out with his friends is something Mike would've loved, James said.

"He would be out of his mind knowing this was going on," James said.
