YONKERS, N.Y. A popular summer concert series is back in Yonkers and bringing the Friday night party to the waterfront.
The Yonkers Downtown Business Improvement District kicked off its 6th annual Jazz, Blues and More at Dusk concert series last month, a 10-week lineup of toe-tapping music acts. On Friday, New York City saxophonist Jonny Hirsch took his band to the Yonkers Waterfront Amphitheatre in a 1 1/2-hour mix of rock, funk, jazz and even a little scat.
Dozens of visitors braved the warm temperatures, clapping their hands and singing along as Hirsch and his five-man band rocked out to songs like Shoobee Do Love and Night Shift.
As the sun set over the Hudson River behind the band, Angel Maisomett said he was enjoying the atmosphere in his first trip to the Jazz and Blues at Dusk series.
I like it a lot, he said. This is a great place to play. I like that its by the water.
Evan Hirsch, a Putnam Valley native, said he was impressed by the waterfront scene. The 31-year-old musician said he had visited Yonkers many times as a child but never imagined the harbor could look like it does today.
There was no way we were hanging out here, he said. Look how amazing it is now. This is an awesome hangout now.
The concerts will continue at 6:30 p.m. July 13 with a performance by Willie Villegas y Entre Amigos, a two trombone-led salsa group out of Brooklyn.
