Yonkers To Join City Of Water Day Celebrations

YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers is preparing for a wet and wild good time.

The Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance's Fifth Annual City of Water Day festival will kick off Saturday in a celebration of the New York City area waterfront. And for the first time, Yonkers will be right in the middle of the fun.

“It’s a day to enjoy the river and come down and celebrate the Palisades and the [Hudson] River,” said Steve Sansone, executive director of the Yonkers Downtown Waterfront Business Improvement District.

With temperatures expected to be in the mid-80s, the alliance hopes to draw more than 25,000 visitors up and down the harbor, from Staten Island to Brooklyn to Manhattan. The one-day event is a celebration of the region's waterfront and its world-class potential, the alliance says on its website.

"City of Water Day is the Metropolitan Waterfront Alliance’s way to bring together everything about the water that is exciting and fun, from port commerce to environmental education to active recreation," the alliance says.

The most popular draws will be New York City’s Governors Island and Jersey City’s Liberty State Park. But for those looking to stay a little closer to home, Yonkers will be the only city in Westchester County participating in the event.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., visitors can enjoy river music and children’s activities hosted by the Yonkers Downtown Waterfront Business Improvement District. Events will be on the city’s Waterfront Esplanade, at the foot of Main Street and adjacent to the Yonkers Pier.

At the Beczak Environmental Education Center, visitors will have a chance to go seining – a type of fishing with a 30-foot-long net — while wearing chest waders to keep dry in the river. The event is open to visitors of all ages, and the education center will provide the gear, rain or shine.

The Science Barge will feature Salty the Giant Live Crab and his lessons on crabbing. The Hudson River Museum will put on an interactive display of Origami sailboat-making.
