YONKERS, N.Y. With the Jewish New Year fast approaching, Yonkers shoppers are scrambling to fill their cupboards.
Shoppers scoured the shelves of supermarkets and delis Thursday, stocking up on kosher dishes for Rosh Hashanah. At Eden Kosher on Central Park Avenue, Leah Harris was filling her basket with apples and honey, traditional desserts for the holiday that begins Sunday at sundown and continues until Tuesday evening.
Every holiday is different, but this a fun holiday, the recent college graduate said. Its nice because you get together with your family and there is a lot of food to go around.
Harris said her family will entertain several guests during its Rosh Hashanah dinners. On the menu are items including gefilte fish, brisket, hummus, chicken soup and matzo balls.
Eden Kosher owner Alan Harris said that, in the three days leading up to Rosh Hashanah, his store will likely see a stream of observers grabbing last-minute items for their dinners.
These are some of the busiest days of the year for us, he said.
But Rosh Hashanah is about more than just food, shoppers were quick to point out. Its focus is inner renewal, spirituality and celebration of the new year.
Around Yonkers, synagogues and temples will hold Rosh Hashanah services. Among those will be Mishkan Haam, which will hold services Sunday evening as well as Monday and Tuesday morning in the Park Hill Racquet Club.
The Northeast Jewish Center will host morning services at its 11 Salisbury Road location, followed by evening candle lighting services.
In addition, Yonkers Public Schools will be closed Monday and Tuesday in observance of the holiday.
