On Wednesday, Spano announced that they would begin collecting new pajamas and books for teens and tots that may not have access to them otherwise during the winter. There is a drop off bin on the first floor of City Hall that will be available to residents until the drive concludes on Monday, Nov. 7.
Each year, school districts and municipalities participate in the pajama drive, which concludes with the annual arrival of a school bus that students fill with everything that was collected.
“While we often think of coats and other clothing apparel as immediate needs for those less fortunate, we need to be reminded that some of our youngsters don’t have appropriate pajamas in which to sleep, especially as we enter the winter season," Spano said.."I encourage those who are able to, to donate so our children can sleep comfortably and soundly at night.”
“The Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need, many of whom are waiting and hoping to be adopted,” according to the program’s mission statement. “These children live in various situations including group homes, shelters and temporary housing facilities and are shuffled often from one place to another. Many of them have been abandoned, abused or neglected.
“Most of these children have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a mother or father tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story. Some of the children we serve are living with their families below the poverty level, in desperate need of food, clothing and shelter.”
After it departs from Yonkers, the bus will then make its way to other schools in Westchester County that are participating in the program. Donations or new pajamas and goods can be dropped off at City Hall through Monday, Nov. 7.
