Westchester Producers Shine In Film Festival Program

YONKERS, N.Y. -- The inaugural Yonkers Film Festival (YoFi) released its acceptance list to The Daily Voice on Tuesday, naming several Westchester filmmakers as participants.

Ten of the 52 accepted films were either produced in the county or directed by Westchester locals.

Three of the six feature films take place in Yonkers or were made by Yonkers natives. "Lost Rivers," a documentary, includes footage of the Saw Mill River Daylighting Project.

"The Mirror," was directed by William Dickerson, who was born and raised in Yonkers.

"Play Until Your Fingers Bleed," is a documentary about the band Kleen Kut, which played frequently in Yonkers during the 1980s.

Several of the shorts, which are categorized by founder Dave Steck as "under 40 minutes," also have roots in Westchester:

* "Come As You Are," was directed by Scott Rucco of Tuckahoe.

* "Kings Heart," was directed by Kevin O'Bryan of Eastchester.

* "Liberator" executive producer and cowriter Jim Cirile was born and raised in Yonkers.

* "Ode to Gaia," was directed by Virginia Perez of Yonkers.

* "That's News To Me," was directed by David Simon of Dobbs Ferry.

* "Illness" stars Julian and Francesca Murdoch of Rye. Lead actor Noah Silverman, associate producer Randi Silverman and second camera operator Eli Silverman live in Armonk.

Two Westchester students also made the list with their films: Steve Miosku of Yonkers who directed "A Tale of Two Bakers," and Ben Fraternale of Irvington who directed "Socks and Robbers."

Two feature films that will be studied at the festival, "I Want My Name Back," and "In The Family," also use Yonkers as their setting.

Submissions were received from across North and South America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

"We were really surprised, not only at the number of submissions we received," Steck said, "but also at the high quality of the films."

Steck said the festival board created additional screenings and rented out extra space in order to showcase more films.

"We really wanted to bring as much of this work to an audience as possible," he said, "I think that attendees will be very impressed with the caliber of work that they see at the festival this year."
