Red Cross Holds Disaster Volunteer Institute Workshop In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. — Mark your calendars: The American Red Cross will be hosting a Disaster Volunteer Institute workshop April 18 from 9:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Yonkers Riverfront Library.

This workshop is a partnership with both the city of  Yonkers and the Yonkers Office of Emergency (OEM) Management, who are essentially community partners with the American Red Cross.

The non-profit organization recently honored Yonkers OEM with the prestigious community partners award during a ceremony celebrating "March is Red Cross Month."

"The Disaster Volunteer Institute provides exceptional training for interested members of the community and what is called 'One Day of Training, Lifetime of Opportunity,'" said Abigail Adams, Regional Communications Officer for the American Red Cross, Greater New York region. "This one day of  training is a condensed version which will get people quickly on the track to becoming active Red Cross volunteers."

Volunteers work in a variety of critical roles to help families displaced by home fires, floods and other disasters. Adams said a critical event in the city was during the Yonkers Mudslide on March 11 where the organization worked in relocating nearly 150 residents.
