Yonkers Is Locale For New HBO Series, 'Show Me A Hero'

YONKERS, N.Y. -- If the scenes in the new HBO miniseries, "Show Me a Hero," look familiar to Westchesterites and those that live in Yonkers in particular, that's because they are.

The show, which debuts August 16 at 8 p.m., was shot at several Yonkers locations including City Hall, 87 Nepperhan Aveue, Schlobohm Housing, Helena Avenue Grintin Will Library, and Oakland Cemetery, to name a few.

According to Christina Gilmartin, Communications Director for Mayor Spano, the production, created by David Simon (of "The Wire" and "Treme" fame) and directed by Paul Haggis ("Crash”), is all about authenticity.

The six-part miniseries, which stars Oscar Isaac, is based on  "Show Me A Hero," a non-fiction book by Dobbs Ferry-based Author Lisa Belkin. (See previous Daily Voice story about Belkin here.)

The story is based on specific events that arose from the public's resistance to a federally-mandated public housing development in Yonkers in the late 1980s and how those tensions affected the city, as well as ordinary citizens' lives.

"The young mayor [Isaac] of a mid-sized American city is faced with a federal court order that says he must build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his town," reads the HBO press release.

Aside from Oscar Isaac, the show also features Catherine Keener, Alfred Molina, Winona Ryder, LaTanya Richardson-Jackson, Bob Balaban and Jim Belushi.
