On May 4, the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park, which runs through parts of Yonkers, will be one of more than 70 state parks hosting clean-up and beautification efforts as part of the second annual “I Love My Park Day.”

“I am pleased to again invite New Yorkers to participate in this annual volunteer initiative to help clean and spruce up these great state assets which play a significant role in our tourism industry and economy,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in statement.

Two events will be held on May 4 at the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Park, which runs from Van Cortlandt Park at the Bronx/Yonkers border to the Croton Dam in Cortlandt.

The first will be in nearby Draper Park in Hastings where volunteers will cut vines and collect trash.  The second Old Croton Aqueduct cleanup will be further north, in Croton.  There, clean-up efforts will also include an introductory tutorial in the identification of invasive plants and vines and instruction on removal techniques.

Volunteers can register online at the state’s Parks & Trails website.

But New York State isn’t the only ones looking to spruce up the old aqueduct.

The City of Yonkers will host a cleanup of its on Sunday. Volunteers will gather at Lenoir Nature Preserve at 9 a.m. to clean up the Yonkers portion of the park.

Unfortunately, Mayor Mike Spano, there is plenty of work to be done as the area has become a hotspot for littering.

“I am pleased we have gathered a strong group of community stakeholders who are willing to donate their time and resources for the sake of a cleaner, greener trail for all to enjoy,” he said.  “I invite our residents to join our efforts and volunteer that day.”

Volunteers for the Yonkers event are encouraged to register at www.volunteer-center.org or on-site Sunday.
