“We challenge everyone to pick up a hammer and build with us throughout the year,” said Jim Killoran, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of Westchester. “We are blessed to have the pope visit New York. “His mission to help those in poverty and his love of the environment is at the heart of our mission; to help everyone live in a green neighborhood.”

To help fulfill Habitat and the pope’s mission, an anonymous donor contributed money to Habitat to secure the building site in partnership with the city of Yonkers. Habitat will have 300 volunteers throughout the week, including 180 who worked Thursday at 124 High St. and all throughout Yonkers.

The formerly foreclosed home on High Street is being dedicated in honor of Pope Francis and his first visit to the United States.

“Habitat for Humanity supports that common goal while bringing together volunteers from all walks of life who understand Pope Francis' words that work confers dignity. I hope you'll consider joining me on this worthy project," said Yonkers City Council President Liam McLaughlin.

Fordham University, Iona College, School of the Holy Child, Relig Youth Ministry, St. Joseph's of Bronxville, Holy Family Parish, St. John & Paul of Larchmont, St. Augustine’s Church of Larchmont, and St. John’s the Baptist of Yonkers are just a sample of the many groups volunteering during the "Pope Francis Build-A- Thon."

There was a blessing and dedication ceremony Thursday and a call of action to every resident in Westchester.
