Yonkers Shoppers Missing Out On Coupon Deals

YONKERS, N.Y. – If a penny saved is a penny earned, the piggy banks of many Yonkers shoppers might be running on empty.

That’s because Yonkers shoppers are not frugal shoppers, a recent study has found. In fact, they are among the worst at taking advantage of online coupons, ShopAtHome.com reports.

In its August "buy-havior" report, the website tracked the online coupon use of shoppers in cities around the county with populations of more than 100,000.

Out of 226 cities on the list, Yonkers came in at a dismal 209th in coupon and discount code use from January to July. Yonkers neighbors in New York City didn’t fare much better, landing at 196th on the list. Fellow New Yorkers in three upstate cities, however, all found their way into the top 50, with Syracuse leading the way at 16th.

Industry experts say online couponing has been on the rise in recent years, with an estimated 49 million people using printable or digital coupons in 2010, according to Simmons Research.

And now, the need for coupon use may be greater than ever before. In July, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it is projecting as much as a 5 percent price increase for many food items over the next nine months thanks to a drought in parts of the country.

Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart magazine, told ABC News that the best hope for shoppers to keep the grocery bill down was head to the Internet.

”The best thing you can do is if all you’re doing is clipping coupons in newspapers – go online,” Freeman said, according to the report. “There are literally hundreds of coupons online and if you’re not tapping that, you’re missing out on a huge resource for savings.”

Stephanie Nelson, founder of Couponmom.com, agreed and said it’s realistic for families to cut their grocery bills in half, just by paying attention to store sales and taking advantage of coupons.

"Strategic shopping is not about changing the way you eat, it is changing the way you buy the food that you like,” Nelson writes on her website.
