The initiative, called YONY, comes on the heels of of the grand opening of tech company Mindspark’s new headquarters in the former Otis Elevator building and the announcement of plans by art collector Daniel Wolf and architect Maya Lin to transform the old City Jail on the waterfront into art studios, gallery and exhibition space.
The YONY initiative is focused on attracting technology companies to the waterfront; helping seed start-ups interested in moving to the district; and creating a social and professional infrastructure of residents working in and passionate about creative industries such as tech, new media, digital marketing, e-publishing, design, architecture, fashion, art, filmmaking and writing.
“Yonkers is ripe for tech and arts development and I am committed to transforming our city into a creative destination,” Spano said in a statement. “Our waterfront neighborhood is located just minutes from Manhattan, has great restaurants, beautiful parks and luxury waterfront living. It’s a landscape that inspires creativity and will attract creative people to our city.”
YONY will launch the YONY Rivertowns Creative Meet-up in early December. It will be a monthly regional event co-hosted by Sarah Lawrence College and held at the Yonkers Riverfront Library. The meet-ups that will target Yonkers and the Rivertowns and will feature a networking reception followed by a discussion with a keynote speaker or panel that will share personal insights and experiences on building successful creative enterprises.
