YONKERS, N.Y. St. Johns Riverside Hospital in Yonkers is going green with a little help from New York State.
The hospital has been given nearly $1 million to renovate its rooftop and transform the space into a green haven, the hospital announced this week.
Seven asphalt roof areas, covering more than 17,000 square feet, will be replaced with gardens in what state officials said is one of the largest Green Innovation Grants ever awarded.
The green rooftops are designed to reduce the hospitals energy consumption, improve our energy efficiency, and slow local storm water runoff," Ronald J. Corti, hospital president and CEO, said in a news release.
He added that, as a hospital, we pride ourselves on our green initiative focus, and this seemed a natural next step in our efforts.
State officials said the rain-absorbing gardens will also extend the life of the roofs while providing noise and thermal insulation, lowering hospital bills.
The hospital's rooftop transformation is one of more than 100 projects since 2010 selected to receive money from an $80 million green funding pool. The unearthing of the Saw Mill River in downtown Yonkers was also selected for funding.
The Green Innovation Grant program was created using federal funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
