Famed Texas Cinema Plans Yonkers Debut

YONKERS, N.Y. – A famed Texas cinema is bringing its brand of theater experience to Yonkers and reinventing the way daters do dinner and a movie.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, where movies, beer and lamb chops live in harmony, has announced its plans to open a theater at 2500 Central Park Ave. later this year.

“We are excited to get to know and become a part of Yonkers with our second New York location,” CEO and Founder of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Tim League said in a press release. The company previously announced its plans to open a theater in Manhattan in 2013.

Named the “Best Theater Ever” by Time Magazine and “the coolest theater in the world” by Wired Magazine, Alamo Drafthouse allows movie-goers to order food and drinks from servers who quietly attend to them throughout the movie. The full length menu features everything from sandwiches and crab cakes to tea and beer.

In Yonkers, the Alamo will feature six screens of new release movies, independent and repertory films and with the theater’s signature programming. Four of the six theaters will be equipped for 3D projection, according to the cinema.

Yonkers City Councilman Michael Sabatino was a visitor at the Alamo Drafthouse’s Austin theater and said the cinema is a good addition to Yonkers.

“It’s an interesting concept and I think it will do well here in the city,” he said.

In a 2011 interview with the New York Times, League said he and his wife opened the cinema in 1997 after thinking about all the things they hated about the movie-going experience. League said the layout of every theater eliminates the traditional front row, ensuring every seat in the house allows for a great viewing experience.

The cinema also created a strict no talking/texting policy and violating it could get you kicked out, or even banned, from the multiplex.  The Alamo gained worldwide attention for the policy after it posted a call on YouTube from an angry customer who was kicked out of its Austin theater.

As news of the Alamo’s opening in Yonkers spread among movie-goers around Westchester via Facebook and Twitter, their excitement was evident.

“I live close to Yonkers!” Jen Dykstra wrote on Twitter. “Just moved from Austin to Ossining and a Westchester location is a god send.”
