Snowy White Plains Make Use Of Leftover Salt After Storms

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - The White Plains Department of Public Works has responded to 17 storms so far in the winter of 2012-13, more than the usual winter average of 12 to 13 storms, said Karen Pasquale of the mayor's office.

The city saved a lot of salt that it had bought but not used in the winter of 2011-12 because of the lack of snowstorms. As a result, the city DPW has about 1,500 tons of salt leftover, even after the 17 storms this year. This is enough for one large snowstorm or two smaller ones, Pasquale said.

Each year the budget for snow removal is based on the average expenses from the previous five years.
