WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Darrell Everett took the opening kickoff and raced 95 yards for a touchdown and caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeff Avery Friday to ignite White Plains to a 40-21 victory over visiting Yorktown.
Its what I try to do every time I get the ball, said Everett, a speed back that needs very little space to make his move once he gets the ball. I want to make those big runbacks to get the team going. I hope I did it.
Avery, who scored on a quarterback keeper and threw several big passes that moved the Tigers offense on four scoring drives to take a 27-0 lead before the half, was quietly satisfied with his teams performance.
We played well on both side of the ball all night for the first time, Avery said. This is how we can play and it a good time to be coming together.
White Plains (3-2) won its third straight game and showed balance and consistent play on offense and defense, stretching leads to 34-6 and 40-13 to put the game out of reach.
The Huskers (3-3) got two scored from fullback Connor Vercruyesse and a late touchdown by quarterback Nick Mariano but never threatened after the first quarter.
We played strong defense and made big plays on offense, but the defense was key, said running back Jaeshon Brooks, who scored from four yards out to give the Tigers a 12-0 lead midway through the first quarter. We have to play well through the whole game. We are playing like we want to be in the playoffs.
Thomas Bertram returned an interception 46 yards to give White Plains a 19-0 lead and Michael Scotman closed out the scoring for the Tigers with a slashing, darting 53-yard dash down the left sideline for a touchdown.
The Tigers continue their playoff push next Friday at Arlington at 7 p.m.
