White Plains Modified Wrestlers Learn on the Mat

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Young up-and-coming wrestlers from Hastings, New Rochelle and White Plains high school modified wrestling programs met in a tri-match scrimmage at Hastings High School Tuesday to work on the skills they have been learning in practices.

“For the new wrestlers it’s about not being nervous and remembering the things you learn in practice,” White Plains’ 180-pounder Omar Tapia said after winning his first match of the afternoon. “This is my second year, so I concentrate on breathing and not getting out of control. You can’t let yourself get too excited.”

Modified wrestling programs serve to groom young grapplers in the skills, moves and holds they will need to perfect to become successful in the circle. Tuesday’s scrimmage gave the young wrestlers a chance to face at least two opponents from the opposing schools.

“We have a chance to see how well the kids are developing muscle memory, techniques they do over and over in practice,” Hastings coach Richard Kavy said. “They know about single and double leg shots because we’ve drilled the moves time and time again and the matches are where we get to see those skills under pressure.”

The large group of White Plains wrestlers held their own, winning several matches with pins and moving through their skills while teammates cheered them on from the sidelines.

“We all work hard and it’s exciting to see everyone out there on the mat,” Tapia said. “We all want to improve.”
