Avery was elected by his teammates. Avery is the starting quarterback who led last year's team to a 4-1 record before suffering a season-ending injury in the sixth game. He completed 51 of 101 passes (50.5 percent) for 892 yards and 11 touchdowns and only two interceptions.

He averaged 148.7 yards per game and had an efficiency rating of 156.66. Avery also rushed for 184 yards and two touchdowns on 72 attempts.

A one-time Liberty League Offensive Performer of the Week, he was first on the team in total yards (1,076) despite missing the final five contests. In 12 career games, Avery has completed 94 of 192 (48.9 percent) of his passes for 1,363 yards with 14 touchdowns and four interceptions. He has also rushed for 392 yards and four touchdowns on 125 carries.

A business and management major, Avery played six games, including five as a starter, during his sophomore season.

The captains are among the 15 returning starters for RPI, which is coming off a 6-5 campaign (4-3 Liberty League).
