WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. The White Plains Tigers have officially recovered from two early-season losses and are poised for a shot at a Class AA playoff berth with a win this week at Arlington High School.
We knew we had to win all of our games after we lost the first two, Tigers running back Darrell Everett said. Now we are playing on offense and defense the way we knew we could with the chance of being in the playoffs.
The Tigers (3-2) have won three straight games, the most recent a convincing 40-21 victory over Yorktown last Friday night and need this win to qualify for playoff consideration.
Arlington (5-1) is well coached by Dominick DeMatteo, the son of Somers coach Tony DeMatteo, and is always prepared.
Everett is one of several weapons the Tigers have on offense. The senior returns kicks and punts like no one else in Section 1, having returned three for scores this season, the most recent a 95-yard dazzler to start the Yorktown game. He will be used more than he has been from scrimmage now that his concussion has fully healed.
The Tigers are led by quarterback Jeff Avery, who can throw and pull the ball down and run as he did for a score last week. Running backs Jaeshon Brooks and Michael Scotman are threats to run and are both active receivers for Avery.
Arlington, a defense-first group that has outscored 103-69 allowing 11.5 points per game, will have to deal with the Tigers speed. The Tigers cant make mistakes against a well-coached group that knows how to win games.
Both teams lost to North Rockland and both defeated Suffern and Yorktown, but the Tigers have improved each week. Look for the Tigers to win this one with a big play.
