WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. When White Plains and Mount Vernon met earlier this season, the Tigers lost by 63 points. The score was closer on Tuesday but the Knights still won comfortably.
Mount Vernon rolled past White Plains, 80-55, behind Jerrel Marshalls 22 points. Isaiah Cousins, frequently the leading scorer for the Knights, added 11 points.
White Plains (8-7) coach Spencer Mayfield said the performance showed Mount Vernons depth.
You have to defend all 15 of them, Mayfield said. Because they can all play.
Thirteen of 15 players scored at least one point for Mount Vernon on Tuesday. But while the Knights flexed their depth, White Plains played shorthanded. Mikey Scotman will have surgery Friday to repair his shoulder and did not play Tuesday.
Akeem Williams led the Tigers with 25 points and Anthony Williams added 16. Mayfield said he was proud of the nine players who competed on Tuesday.
The 63-point blowout earlier this season occurred at Mount Vernon. The Tigers hosted the Knights on Tuesday, but Mount Vernons ability to spread the ball around the floor still proved to be too much for White Plains.
They spread the ball. Theyre very well-coached. They play well together, Mayfield said. Theyre a very confident team and they know how to play.
White Plains now turns its attention to Thursdays game against New Rochelle. Mayfield said he recalled the Tigers poor free throw shooting (15-for-33) and their 22 turnovers in the last meeting with the Huguenots.
Mayfield said he knows his team must improve in those areas to earn the win.
If we can make those corrections, we can hopefully turn that one around, Mayfield said.
