James, a 6-foot-1 point guard, has demonstrated a relaxed and poised approach on the court, leading the Crusaders to a 15-5 record to date. James is averaging 16 points per game along with eight assists and seven rebounds.
James’ play has resulted in his selection as The White Plains Daily Voice Athlete of the Month for January.
“I knew coming in this year I was going to have to do a lot of things to help our team to win,” said James, who will attend Monmouth University in September and play basketball.
James, a Greenburgh resident, felt he needed to increase his scoring production this season after averaging 11 points a game last year.
“Coach wanted me to take more of a leadership role and he also wanted me to score more,” James said of Stepinac coach Timothy Philp.
Even though his scoring average has risen, James has not lost sight of his point-guard responsibility of getting everyone involved.
“I am more of a pass-first point guard and know where my teammates are on the floor,” James said. “And I also know when I need to score.”
James and the team are quite pleased with their 15-5 record. James pointed to one major factor in the team’s success.
“We have great team chemistry,” James said. “We have a great group of guys, especially the seniors, who can make plays.”
