WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Darrell Everett showed his blinding speed, scoring twice on long runs for White Plains, but the host Tigers fell just short in a 19-15 opening-game loss to North Rockland Friday night.
Down 6-0 after two Raiders field goals in the first half, Everett ran 47 yards for a touchdown and returned a punt 77 yards for another score to help the Tigers to a 15-12 lead. The large crowd roared each time the senior sprinter touched the ball.
The White Plains defense held off the Raiders inside its own 20-yard line twice in the first half, leaving North Rockland with only the two field goals. After Everetts first run and the extra point gave the Tigers a 7-6 lead, North Rocklands Tom Ginny took the ensuing kickoff and appeared to be headed to the end zone until Everett chased him down. A Tigers penalty on Gintys runback gave the Raiders the ball at the White Plains 35 and the visitors took back the lead five plays later at 12-7.
Everett then returned a punt 77 yards to give the Tigers a 15-12 lead early in the fourth quarter. North Rockland moved the ball downfield on its next possession, moving 55 yards on 8 plays and halfback Nick Connell ran in from the 5-yard line to give the Raiders back the lead at 19-15.
