The annual ceremony is sponsored by the Women’s Research and Education Fund.

Paez is a member of her school’s chapter of Students Terminating Abusive Relationships (STAR), a peer leadership program that promotes healthy relationships based on equality, trust and respect. The program is sponsored by Hope’s Door, a charity that strives to end domestic violence and empower victims to find safety, independence and healing from the trauma of abuse.

Hopes’s Door presented the award to Paez.

“We are so proud of Jeaney and pleased to present her with our first Shining Star Scholarship for all of her hard work with the STAR chapter at White Plains High School,” said CarlLa Horton, executive director of Hope’s Door. “She and the other scholarship recipients are wonderful examples of leadership in the young adult community here in Westchester County and we applaud their efforts.”

After Paez graduates in June, she plans to study psychology at Westchester Community College. “STAR has taught me the skills that will help me make smart and healthy decisions in life and become the successful, young woman that I know I can be,” she said.
