WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- As an Intel Science Talent Search finalist, White Plains senior Benjamin Van Doren will get to meet President Barack Obama while competing against 39 other finalists in Washington D.C. this March.
Van Doren will present his research project titled Meteorological, Topographical and Behavioral Correlates of Diurnal Autumn Morning Flight Migration in the Northeastern United States to college presidents, professors and major researchers from across the country.
The Intel finalists will compete for the grand prize of $100,000. However, all will receive at least $7,500 after presenting their findings.
Van Doren, the former New York State Young Birders Club President, plans to attend Cornell University next fall. He is also the track team captain, a jazz band musician and a member of the academic challenge team.
Ever since the high school graduated its first Science Research Program class in 2000, White Plains has had 16 students named as semifinalists. Van Doren is the first local student to be named an Intel finalist.
