White Plains Schools Kick Off Academic Year

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- By about 2:35 p.m. Tuesday dozens of parents and siblings had lined up behind the side entrance of Church Street Elementary School and, at the very front, Shad Interligi, and his daughter waited to hear about big sister Sophia's first day of kindergarten.

"[Sophia] was psyched. We'll see how she is when she gets out," Interligi, 36, said of his four-year-old's first day of school. "It's very weird to have her gone."

Interligi, who owns a media company, said his family moved from Brooklyn to White Plains about two years ago so their daughters could take advantage of the highly-rated school system.

"Today is really the beginning of why we came here," said Interligi. "We met her kindergarten teacher and she seemed really sweet. We aren't nervous because we've heard all of the kindergarten teachers are really good."

Interligi and his daughter were determined not to let the rain ruin the mood of the day and came armed with umbrellas and rain boots. Sophia came out about 10 minutes later and said school was "good."

Others, such as Gloria Cabrero, braved the rain while picking up her daughter Jaeqiln.

"Of course she's excited to be back in school," said Cabrero, 48, who said she had a good experience with her three elder children at Church Street. "I know the teachers. I know the school. It's very good."

Even though the school year was just beginning, Jaeqiln, 10, was already looking ahead.

"She told me, 'Today is the last day I'll go to elementary school for the first time,'" said Cabrero. "She's already excited for middle school."
