White Plains Schools Facing $2M In Budget Reductions

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – The White Plains School District will need to consider about $2 million in cuts to meet the state-imposed 2 percent property tax levy cap for the 2013-14 budget, Rosemarie Eller, president of the board of education, said in a statement.

The constraints of the tax cap are coupled with proposed reductions in federal aid, large increases in pension rates and a difficult economic situation, Eller said.

“We hope to work together with the community to develop a budget that maintains the high quality of education in White Plains and that is fiscally responsible and can be supported by the taxpayers in the May 21 vote,” Christopher Clouet, superintendent of White Plains schools, said in a statement.

There will be public hearings March 18 on the preliminary proposed budget and May 13 on the adopted proposed budget. Both will be at 7:30 p.m. at Education House, 5 Homeside Lane.

However, the public can voice their opinions on the budget at two budget forums at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 and March 20 at the White Plains High School B-1 room. There also will be an information session at 3 p.m. March 17.

The district also is asking any group or organization wishing to host such a meeting to contact the superintendent’s office at 914-422-2033.
