White Plains Families Register for Kindergarten

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Although Maki Itoh said it'll be an adjustment to have her four-year-old away from home for five full days a week next school year, Emi Tonachel is eager to start kindergarten.

"She'll love it. She won't miss us," Itoh said. "She's in the district already at the dual-language pre-kindergarten. It's a fantastic program."

Emi was among the first White Plains children to sign up for kindergarten when the school district's registration period began Thursday. Kindergarten registration runs until Feb. 23. All White Plains children who will turn five by Dec. 31, 2012 are eligible to begin kindergarten in Sept. 2012. Parents should set up a registration appointment by calling the school district's Family Information Center.

After registering, Itoh and Emi will join hundreds of families in attending the "kindergarten roundup" program, which allows future students and parents to tour the district's five elementary schools.

"We know Post Road pretty well because that's where she is for pre-kindergarten and my sister's children go to GW," Itoh said, referring to George Washington. "So we'd like to take a look at the other three."

Parents who register by Feb. 23 are eligible to indicate the elementary school they prefer for their children. During the past 23 years of the Controlled Parents' Choice Program, 93 percent of parents got their first school choice, 97 percent got their first or second school choice and 100 percent of parents got one of their top three school choices, according to a press release from the White Plains School District.
