Polls will be open in countless county schools and community centers from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, as residents determine whether or not to accept the proposed spending plans.
In Mount Vernon, for the first time in years, there will be no tax levy increase for homeowners if the $230 million schools budget is approved; whereas voters with children in Rye City and Edgemont School Districts are being asked to approve tax increases above the mandated state cap.
If the public fails to approve a budget on May 19, it will be put to a secondary vote in June. If it fails a second time, the district will be forced to install a contingency spending plan that will include thousands of dollars in additional cuts, likely forcing them to eliminate sports, clubs and schools organizations.
With Common Core and the governor’s recent education reform fresh on the minds of educators and parents alike, this stands to be one of the busiest Election Days in recent memory. Polling places countywide will be open from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Election Day.
