WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Archbishop Stepinac students are scrambling to collect 50,000 cans of food by Feb.1 to successfully complete the largest community drive in the high school's 63-year history.
For the first time, Stepinac students will be joining young people across the county in working to fight hunger during the annual "Souper Bowl of Caring" drive. The Grace Church Community Center in White Plains, which primarily serves homeless and at-risk Westchester residents, and the Don Bosco Community Center in Port Chester will receive whatever Stepinac collects. Students will be given Feb. 6, the day after the Super Bowl, off from school if they reach their goal.
Each of Stepinac's 625 students is being asked to donate 100 cans or boxes of food. However, staff, alumni, administration and the larger community are invited to help the "Souper Bowl" drive by leaving food in donation bins or donating cans and boxes for the crew of students who will be at the White Plains Stop and Shop from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
Paul Anderson-Winchell, Grace Church Community Center executive director, said the donations will be put to a good use.
"We greatly appreciate Stepinac students supporting our organization in a significant way. This food drive will help Graces mission in providing food, shelter and other essential services to the nearly 4,000 men, women and children we assist every year," Anderson-Winchell said in a statement.
