Walking the halls of Martin de Porres School in Elmont, on the Nassau County border with Queens, gave the German School students a new perspective on the holidays.

“What we achieved here may be small in the effort to help Sandy victims, but it is vital in the lives of these children, as they are now able to celebrate Christmas,” said Max Bottinger, an 11th-grader at the German School New York. “However, after seeing the struggle in these children's eyes, seeing the way one of them grinned from ear to ear while carrying bags full of socks and toys, one comes to realize that it is the little things in life that can make the largest difference.”

The German School students held a toy and coat drive at their school in White Plains, then on Wednesday delivered the items they had collected.

“Our mission was clear; to help those in need,” Bottinger said. “I think that we accomplished this goal.”
