The aim is to make it easier for those individuals to find work, get admitted to college, find a place to live, and become licensed in certain occupations.
“This initiative is about validating the personal commitment of people who turned their lives around and rejected crime in exchange for being a contributing member of society," Cuomo said in a statement.
The program is the first of its kind in the nation, and will affect around 350 people yearly.
Individuals who haven't had another conviction, are New York residents, pay taxes, aren't registered sex offenders and who are productive members of the community will be eligible for pardons.
