Wassil developed neurosarcoidosis after working as a first responder at the World Trade Center following the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. He became an advocate for healthcare coverage for first responders sickened by working at the site of the twin towers.
A resident of White Plains, and formerly of Putnam Valley, Wassil was born May 25, 1960, in Peekskill to Charles Sr. and Virginia Guzi Wassil.
He attended Hendrick Hudson High School, graduating in 1977. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1977 to 1983. He was a licensed pilot, a member of the Peekskill Policemen's Benevolent Association and the “Wild Pigs” Police Motorcycle Club.
Prior to working for the City of Peekskill he was an officer at the 44th Precinct in the Bronx from 1986-1990.
Wassil is survived by his wife, Angela Wassil of White Plains; sister, Judy Ryan of Mt. Pocono, Pa.; a niece; and many family members and friends.
Calling hours are Friday, May 3 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home, Peekskill, NY. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 4 at 10 a.m. at St. Columbanus Church, Cortlandt Manor. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery.
