White Plains Sports Stores, Bars Root for Giants

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Giants fans have bought up nearly the entire stock of the football team's gear at the White Plains Sports Authority.

The rush began a few weeks ago, according to sales associate Luis Muñoz, who said the section reserved for Giants attire has been downsized to one side of a display case.

"We're sold out of pretty much everything that's Giants," said Muñoz, a Yonkers resident. "Reebok lost the contract this year so everybody wanted to get stuff before it's all Nike."

Muñoz, a Giants fan, will be traveling to Connecticut this weekend to tailgate with friends.

"I hope they win," he said. "I have $100 on it."

Across the street at Dick's Sporting Goods, Elizabeth Miller said the store has seen more Giants fans than usual.

"Everybody is looking for stuff because it's a rare occasion," said Miller, a customer service specialist from New Rochelle. "They're looking for everybody's jersey because they're pretty much playing as a team this year."

Dick's plans to open "right after the Giants win" Sunday, according to Miller, a Big Blue supporter. Fully-stocked Giants gear will also be waiting for fans when the store opens at 6 a.m. Monday.

Bob Hyland's Sports Page Pub expects to have a huge crowd rooting for New York's team right beside former Giants guard and White Plains native Bob Hyland.

"If it's anything like last Sunday, it'll be huge," said Liz Hyland, Bob Hyland's wife. "We see a lot of Eli Manning jersey's in here. It'll be a fun spot to be."

The Sports Page has about eight extra staff on duty to ensure customers get their Sunday specials in an efficient manner, she said.
