The organization, which collects gently used furniture from the public in a warehouse at Westchester County Airport, works with local agencies to identify families in need. Eligible families will come to the warehouse and pick out furniture to outfit their apartments at no cost.
However, this winter the organization has focused some of its efforts towards, by Thanksgiving, donating 25 tables to 25 families who would otherwise have nowhere to sit with their families this holiday season.
The Sittin' Round the Table Project is a collaborative effort between the Furniture Sharehouse and Junk Luggers - a company that aids residents of Westchester and Fairfield counties in disposing off unwanted furniture, which they then repurpose and donate.
Kate Bialo of Mamaroneck is president and executive director of the Furniture Sharehouse.
"The purpose of this whole campaign is to raise money to help furnish 25 families," she said. "It's easier to give thanks around the table if you have a table. You can’t have turkey dinner if you don’t have a table to put it on."
Ronnie Esquivel, Junkluggers' Westchester County and Connecticut Territory Manager, said, "People love it because we're collecting tables from them and donating them in their honor. We’ll send them pictures of the families using their furniture and they really appreciate it."
The Sharehouse's annual holiday campaign also tries to raise enough money to furnish 25 families.
“We want to get them not just a table under their turkey, but the basic furniture they need to create a comfortable and stable home for the holidays and year-round,” Bialo said.
She added, “It costs us about $300 to furnish a family and cash donations are critical to help us pay for collecting furniture from the public and distributing it back out to families that are recovering from homelessness, domestic violence or personal disasters.”
According to Bialo, each eligible family the center serves gets two beds, a sofa, arm chairs, end tables, table and chairs, desks, TVs, lamps - everything they need to establish a home for themselves.
