WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Family and friends of 9/11 victims, community leaders and politicians commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks Thursday by touring remains from Ground Zero in the second floor gallery of the White Plains Library.
White Plains Mayor Thomas Roach said city hall and the library were honored to be selected to host one of the 30 "New York Remembers" exhibits setup across the state.
"I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Governor [Andrew] Cuomo for bringing this forward. At 30 locations throughout our state there are similar exhibits with artifacts from 9/11 that enable all of us to remember that tragic day and honor the memory of those we lost," said Roach.
Amidst missing notices and remembrance notes left at Ground Zero, a local fire department's riding list on 9/11 and a New York Police Department's dislodged car door, New York Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy expressed his appreciation for public safety officers who braved rescues near the crumbling towers.
"We take time to reinforce the history, the sacrifice, the valor, the loss we had on that day," said Duffy. "Its a time to remember that almost 3,000 people lost their lives and, 10 years later, there are moms and dads and sisters and brothers and children who have lost a loved one. What we have to do is make sure that young kids growing up today who perhaps were not born or were too young to remember that day 10 years ago remember this."
County Executive Robert Astorino noted that the exhibit artifacts supplied by the New York State Museum and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum helped revive the memory of 123 Westchester residents who died during the attacks.
"These exhibits, as difficult as they are to look at, [are] a reminder to all of us that there were really people attached to all of this terrible, terrible incident and lives were changed forever," said Astorino. "It is also important to note and remember the heroism and the humanity and the goodness that came out of that drastic day because as horrible as it was Americans truly did come together."
The "New York Remembers" exhibit will be on display at the White Plains Library through the end of September.
