White Plains Groups To Celebrate MLK Through Songfest

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and work will be celebrated through song at the Chapel of the Divine Compassion, Good Counsel, at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Several local religious, community and spiritual groups will perform at the free community songfest, co-sponsored by Interfaith Connection and the Westchester Martin Luther King Jr. Institute for Nonviolence.

“Dr. King considered music to be the soul of the civil rights movement, embracing protesters in companionship and a common cause,” said Julie Davis Carran, co-chair of the Martin Luther King Jr. Institute for Nonviolence.

The Chapel of the Divine Compassion is at 52 N. Broadway in White Plains.

King once said, “The freedom songs are playing a strong and vital role in our struggle. I think they keep alive a faith, a radiant hope in the future, particularly in our most trying times.”

Christian, Muslim, Buddhist and Jewish groups will perform. They include:

  • Amir Vahab Ensemble (Soroosh) – Sufi music
  • Congregation Kol Ami Choir
  • Little Mount Zion Holy Church
  • Memorial United Methodist Church Choir
  • Mount Hope AME Zion Church Inspirational Choir
  • Shinnyo-En Buddhist Temple - Choral prayer and ceremonial Taiko drums.
