Fourth grader Julianne Pisacane happily gave eight inches of her hair Monday to be made into wigs for cancer patients. It wasnt the first time shes donated.
"I really like it," said the student at Valhalla's Kenisco School. "It feels good to be donating to something good."
Pisacane, a White Plains resident, was one of 26 children and seven adults to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths at a hair donation event held in the Kensico Schools library. Testing coordinator Claudia Floryshak began the event two years ago in memory of her mother, who died 20 years ago from cancer. She said the first hair donations included fewer than 10 students though the number nearly tripled this year.
"The response has been overwhelming," Floryshak said.
Hairdressers from Yorktown's Lorese Salon and Spa and Tuckahoe's Salon Delian staffed a line of chairs inside the library. Students and family members took turns donating inches of their hair.
"I'm amazed by the response," said Lorese owner Kathy Forese. "It's such a selfless thing to do for such a great cause."
Lorese Salon and Spa gives cancer patients makeovers each month through the Look Good Feel Better program. Floryshak visits the Yorktown salon often and said it helped her generate the idea for the schools program.
Fifth grader Isabella Ruane sat down to the snipping sounds of scissors and donated eight inches of her hair. She held long locks in her hands after and smiled as her friends stood nearby taking pictures of her.
"I'm shocked," she said. "I was really scared at first but I'm happy to donate my hair to a good cause."
