The president awarded Flanigen with the medal while a Marine praised her “innovations in the fields of silicate chemistry, the chemistry of zeolites, and molecular sieve materials.”
Flanigen, a Buffalo native, helped develop a way of manufacturing more gasoline from every barrel of oil, as well as a way to extract organics out of paint. She invented more than 200 synthetic materials, including the synthetic emeralds marketed by Union Carbide according to the report.
