WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. ArtsWestchesters 2012 Arts Awards, green programs at the YWCA in honor of Earth Week and a poetry slam at the library are just some of the events planned in White Plains this week:
Monday
- The library invites teens to discuss which books, movies, programs and events they'd like to see at the library over pizza from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Anyone 16 or older is welcome to attend a GED test-preparation course at the library from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- The Ridgeway PTA Playground Committee invites White Plains residents to a Zumba fundraising workout in the elementary school gym. Tickets to the 7:15 p.m.-8:15 p.m. class are $10, or $90 for a 10-class session. Proceeds will help Ridgeway replace its playground.
- The Common Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall to consider a capital project to redesign staircases and walkways at Gillie Park, sign an agreement with the Esplanade and issue $17.5 million in bonds to tear down the Lyon Place garage and build a new parking structure, and consider the Salvation Army's proposal to add a two-story, 15,500-square-foot addition with bedrooms for staff, office space, classrooms and more. - The White Plains Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Education House. The board anticipates entering an executive session.
Tuesday
- The library will hold an April Silliness song, game and story session for 2- and 3-year-olds with adult accompaniment. Tickets will be given out 30 minutes before the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. events.
- The YWCA will host a program on energy conservation for homeowners from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Jean Hamerman, author of Your Comfortable Energy-Efficient Home, Tapani Talo, author of Green Home Design and Solar Residential Construction, and architects will be presenting.
- The White Plains Council of Neighborhood Associations has invited White Plains Business Improvement District Executive Director Kevin Nunn to discuss its clean sweep, events and business outreach programs at the councils Tuesday meeting. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., Nunn will discuss street and sidewalk improvement efforts, member advocacy services and more at the Education House.
Wednesday
- ArtsWestchester will honor illustrator Jerry Pinkney and musician Dennis Bell alongside six arts and cultural organizations at its 2012 Arts Awards. Fox 5 News Anchor Ernie Anastos will welcome guests to an 11:30 a.m. luncheon at the Crowne Plaza Hotel to celebrate Westchester's arts leaders. - The YWCA invites White Plains to drop by its lobby from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. to learn about growing and eating healthy food from a nutrition counselor.
- The Zoning Board of Appeals will meet at 7 p.m. at City Hall. The board will discuss an application to turn 18 Lafayette St. into a two-family home, I&S Food Marts request for a special permit at its 115 W. Post Road location and a proposal to turn 18-20 W. Post Road from a mercantile business into a restaurant. The full agenda is available online.
- The librarys First Wednesday open mic and poetry slam competition will feature guest poet Lauren Zungia, a touring poet who has represented Oklahoma in eight national poetry competitions. Poets who wish to perform should arrive by 6:30 p.m. and bring two original poems that are three minutes or shorter. The open mic will start at 7 p.m.
- The Library Board of Trustees will meet from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the library.
Thursday
- The library will hold a class for adults on Windows skills and how to use a computer mouse from 10:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
- Adults speaking English as a second language are invited to an English conversation group from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the library.
- The library's Galaxy Hall will hold a Lego play session for first-through sixth-graders from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- The Youth Board will meet at 7 p.m. at 11 Amherst Place.
Friday
- The library will be closed Friday.
