What's Happening in White Plains This Week

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Here's a look at what's happening in White Plains this week:

Monday

Parents of children entering kindergarten in Sept. 2012 are invited to tour the Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. and Ridgeway at 1:15 p.m. Tours may last up to an hour and one-half. No children are allowed on tours.

- Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Elementary School will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on its 888 Mamaroneck Ave. campus.

- The RDC Center for Counseling and Human Development will hold a free networking and support group for people who have lost their jobs at 52 N. Broadway from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

- The White Plains Board of Education will meet in the education house at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the non-instructional budget for the upcoming school year.

At the library: 

- Children with caregivers are invited to a "Happy Birthday" story time at Galaxy Hall. Tickets will be given out a half hour prior to the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. readings.

- Adults speaking English as a second language are invited to converse in room A from 2 to 3 p.m.

Tuesday

- Parents of children entering kindergarten in Sept. 2012 are invited to tour Post Road Elementary School at 9:15 a.m., Church Street Elementary School at 1:00 p.m., and either George Washington or Ridgeway elementary schools at 6:30 p.m. Tours may last up to an hour and one-half. No children are allowed on tours.

- Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Elementary School will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on its 888 Mamaroneck Ave. campus.

- The YWCA of White Plains & Central Westchester will host a financial empowerment panel with female leaders from the financial and real estate industries from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Panelists will cover topics such as improving credit scores and keeping them high, creating sound financial goals, and deciding when to purchase or rent a home. 

At the library: 

- Computer classes in Spanish will be held from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m.

- Two and three-year-olds accompanied by an adult are welcome to attend a "This Little Piggy" reading. Tickets will be given out half an hour before the 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. story times.

Wednesday

- Parents of children entering kindergarten in Sept. 2012 are invited to tour George Washington Elementary School at 9:30 a.m. and Mamaroneck Avenue Elementary School at 1:15 p.m. Tours may last up to an hour and one-half. No children are allowed on tours.

- Our Lady of Sorrows Parish Elementary School will host an open house from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on its 888 Mamaroneck Ave. campus.

- Westchester S.C.O.R.E. will give a free business workshop on the basics of using social media to support a business at 120 Bloomingdale Rd. at 1 p.m. 

- The zoning board of appeals will convene in the council chambers at 7 p.m. The public is invited to comment during discussion of an application to build a storage building and legalize a garage reconstruction at 50 Robertson Ave., a proposal to turn 18 Lafayette St. into a two-family home, a plan to build an addition at 19 Seymour Place, and an application to build a garage, porch, and one-story rear addition at 706 Ridgeway. New applications for an above ground swimming pool at 10 Clifton Lane and a special permit amendment for I &S Food Mart at 115 W. Post Rd. will also be taken up. The full agenda is available online.

At the library:

- Pre-schoolers are invited to a craft activity centered around the book "The Cat's Meow." Four and five-year-olds must register a half an hour before the 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. programs.

- Adam Stone, a poet who's been on nine national slam teams, will be a guest performer at the 6:30 p.m. open mic and poetry slam.  -

- Galaxy Hall will host alphabet bingo and readings of various alphabet books from 7 to 8 p.m. Tickets will be given out at 6:30 p.m.

Thursday

- Parents of children entering kindergarten in Sept. 2012 are invited to tour Church Street Elementary School at 9:00 a.m. and Post Road Elementary School at 1:15 p.m. Tours may last up to an hour and one-half. No children are allowed on tours.

- The local American Red Cross will host a blood drive on the Berkeley College campus at 99 Church St. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

- The youth board will gather at 11 Amherst Pl. at 7 p.m.

At the library:

- Parents and 13-month to 36-month-olds are invited to play, craft, and sing with their peers. Experts are on hand to informally discuss nutrition, speech, and child development. Registration for this program is required. Call (914) 422-1476 for more info.

- Adults learning to speak English as a second language are invited to converse in room A from 2 to 3 p.m.

- Galaxy Hall will hold a Wii session for first to fifth graders from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tickets will be given out half an hour before the games begin. 

Friday

Georgetta Morque, a fitness trainer, will lecture on heart-healthy foods, meal planning strategies, and fitness at the Westchester Mall walking program. Admission and parking are free for those who sign up by calling (914) 864-7077. The walkers will gather at the second-floor horse fountain plaza near Crate and Barrel at 9 a.m.

- The Music Conservatory of Westchester will put on an American composers recital to celebrate conservatory musician Lawrence Harris' 80th birthday. Harris will play the baritone. Adriana Pera will accompany him on the cello and his wife Renee Guerrero will play the piano. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at 216 Central Ave.
