Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday if conditions worsen, leaders could close stretches of major highways. The governor encouraged drivers to utilize mass transit Friday as there may be closures of major highways across the state including New York State Thruway I-87, Interstate 84, Interstate 684 and the Long Island Expressway.
"Knowing the potential impact of this winter storm, combined with plummeting temperatures, I have activated the Emergency Operations Center to coordinate response efforts,” Cuomo said in a statement. “We recommend that everyone in potentially affected areas utilize mass transit and take steps to safeguard against frigid temperatures."
Westchester highways -- Saw Mill River, Sprain Brook, Taconic and Bronx River parkways -- as well the state thruways may be hazardous through Saturday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will begin falling Thursday evening and may be heavy at times after midnight with visibility one quarter mile or less at times. Check the complete forecast here.
The New York State Thruway Authority will post information on its website if roads are shut down.
Information on road closures is also available on the Hudson Valley Traveler website.
Westchester County Bee Line bus service may be affected and updates are available on the county's website.
