WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Democrats on the Westchester County Board of Legislators are proposing a law that would ban gun shows in county facilities, according to lohud.com.

The legislation, put forward earlier this week, states that "no person shall participate in a gun show on county-owned property." In the past, gun shows were held annually at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, said lohud.com.

Sponsored by eight of the 10 Democratic legislators, the call for the proposed ban comes just weeks after calls for a ban were voiced following a mass shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon, reported lohud.com.

A spokesman for Westchester County Executive Robert Astorino repeated the administration's position against such a ban, said lohud.com.

In the past two weeks, 3,400 people have signed a MoveOn.org petition calling for Westchester to ban gun shows in the County Center, reported lohud.com.
