Volkswagen Is Ordered To Recall 500K Cars For Emissions Test Trick

Volkswagen has been ordered to recall almost 500,000 vehicles after the Environmental Protection Agency determined the car manufacturer violated EPA standards by using software to circumvent emission levels.

The affected vehicles are four-cylinder Volkswagen and Audi vehicles made between the model years 2009 and 2015.

The software worked when undergoing official testing, yet shut itself off when on the road, according to the New York Times. This caused heavier than reported amounts of pollution.

With the software shut off, nitrogen oxide is released into the air.
