WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- Three Bronx residents were killed in a head-on collision near 1211 Mamaroneck Ave. Saturday night.
Police arrived at the accident on the northbound lanes of Mamaroneck Avenue at approximately 11:18 p.m. and removed four people from a 1991 Toyota Camry that did not appear to have airbags.
The driver of the second car, a 1998 Lexus, was able to get out of his car and was found on the road by police.
CPR was given to the driver of the Toyota, Herbet Royster, 65, and two of his passengers, Aida Royster,70, and David Guerra, 51. All three Bronx residents were declared dead when they arrived at the White Plains Hospital.
The fourth Toyota passenger Edgar Guerra, 61, of the Bronx, was in serious but stable condition at the Westchester Medical Center as of Sunday afternoon.
Edwardo Huezo, 25, of the Bronx, who was driving the Lexus, was treated for blunt trauma and lacerations at the White Plains Hospital.
White Plains Police Department's Accident Investigations Unit and detectives are still investigating the crash, however, preliminary research suggests that the Toyota was traveling south on the northbound lane before it struck the Lexus. Police had shut the southbound lanes of Mamaroneck Avenue between Ridgeway and Rosedale Avenue Saturday night because the storm had dragged down wires and trees nearby.
Public Safety Commissioner David Chong said officers are still investigating the crash and the department will know more after it receives the medical examiner's report.
"As a matter consistent with any tragedy, the department will be working closely with the Medical Examiner's office. Our hearts and prayers go out to all the victims of this horrific event," Chong said in a statement.
Mayor Thomas Roach joined a Consolidated Edison supervisor and off-duty EMS and firefighters from New Rochelle, who helped out at the accident.
"The members of the White Plains Police and Fire Departments, as well as other first responders at the scene, worked hard to assist the victims and get them needed medical attention," Roach said in a statement. "I would like to recognize and thank them for their actions. My deepest condolences go out to the families of the victims."
The storm caused no other serious injuries, however, Chong said several roads would remain closed across White Plains.
"This is fluent because of on-going conditions and conditions that have been repaired," he said in an email.
