WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Michael Saunders was arraigned Thursday morning on four felony charges, including second-degree murder, in the shooting death of Sabrina Durrah of White Plains, Westchester County District Attorney Janet DiFiore announced.
The 49-year-old Yonkers man was arrested March 26 and later charged with shooting Durrah, whose body was found by relatives March 24 near her 4-month-old daughter.
Saunders is the father of the child, Jayme, who was left alone with the body for at least a day, police said. She was treated for dehydration and released to her mother's relatives.
In addition to second-degree murder, which is a class A felony, the Liberty Lines bus driver was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, a class C felony, second-degree assault, a class D felony, and first-degree reckless endangerment, a class D felony. He faces a maximum sentence of 32 years to life in state prison.
The defendant has been remanded to the County Jail, and his next court appearance will be on May 10. David Gove, who is representing Saunders, requested that County Court Judge James Hubert set bail. The prosecution said that wouldn't be appropriate for the crimes he is charged for. Hubert denied the request.
Assistant District Attorney Patricia Murphy, chief of the Superior Court Trial Division, and Assistant District Attorney Wendy Parra of the Superior Court Trial Division are prosecuting the case.
