State Unemployment Falls Below National Average

The state's unemployment numbers fell below the national average in October to 4.8 percent (from 5.1 percent in September), according to statistics released on Thursday by the Department of Labor.

But, despite the good news, many in the state continue to struggle to find employment.

According to the Department of Labor, five areas in the state — Dutchess and Putnam counties, Ithaca, Binghamton, Watertown, and Elmira — lost jobs in the past year.

Counted together as one area by the Department of Labor, Dutchess and Putnam lost 2,900 jobs from October 2014 through October 2015 - a loss of 2 percent.

Westchester, Rockland and Orange, counted as one area, gained 10,800 jobs during that period, an increase of 1.8 percent.

The 4.8 percent state-wide rate is the lowest level recorded since Nov. 2007.

New York added 30,300 to its private-sector job count, according to the Department of Labor.
