Gary Waxman has traversed through the Transcenter parking lot for 30 years while running his Waxmans News shop in the White Plains Metro-North station.
However, Waxman decided to add a detour to his commute after he noticed signs announcing a spike in Transcenter parking pass prices earlier this week.
Its outrageous, said Waxman, 48. Im not going to renew my permit. I understand there are fiscal problems in White Plains, but they cant just kill them all in one jump. They should do it gradually.
The city posted signs at the Transcenter lot Tuesday notifying commuters that parking passes will increase by 20 percent on July 1. Under the 2011-2012 budget, annual daytime parking passes at the lot near the Metro North station will shoot up $165 to $990.
Waxman said his five minute walk to work this summer will not be a hardship. However, he worries about those who live farther from the station.
Its nearly $1,000, and thats a lot for a regular person paying $225 for the train, said Waxman. They need to have pity on the people.
There are about 300 or 400 other parkers who will have to shell out an additional $165 for their annual parking passes, according to Vincent Caldarola, who works at the Transcenter lot.
We had a few grumblers today, said Caldarola.
Complaints were split between concerns about the pass price increases and a flat $10 parking ticket fee, which goes into effect July 1.
According to Waxman, the scrupulousness of parking lot attendants means many will cough up $10.
"If a guy runs in and gets a paper, he might go back to a $10 ticket," said Waxman. "It's upsetting to me."
